While on a prolonged exploratory submarine journey, the sub commander discovers that he and his crew are the only survivors of a mysterious holocaust. When the ruins of Atlantis appear to him where a Japanese island should be, he receives his final piece of information. His second-in-command doubts these judgments, and their conflict is played out over the ocean as they surface periodically in search of further clues.
