Synopsis by Mark Deming

In the 21st Century, shopping is no longer a simple matter of obtaining necessary goods; shopping has become a lifestyle and a key part of an economy in which buying and selling has replaced manufacturing as the driving force. Filmmaker Harun Farocki explores the science behind the modern shopping mall and how consumers are subtly guided to do what retailers want in this documentary. The Creators Of Shopping Worlds features interviews and behind-the-scenes visits with architects, designers, scientists and analysts who make their living creating bigger and better shopping centers and fashioning an environment within that will allow shopkeepers to move their merchandise more efficiently. The film also includes a visit to an annual convention for those in the business of creating and running shopping malls, and a look at how researchers use the behavior of mall patrons to help manipulate them later on. The Creators Of Shopping Worlds was first released in 2001; an updated version was screened at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
