Created in 1918 by Winsor McCay, the comic strip artist who was also a pioneer in the field of animated film, The Centaurs is a simple, plotless silent film that focuses on several of the half-human, half-horse creatures of the title. It opens with a female centaur moving quietly through a forest, then cuts to an older female centaur located among some rocks. The older centaur wears glasses and has a grandmotherly air about her. The younger centaur moves into a field and picks some flowers; nearby, a young male centaur appears and interacts with the female. They go to see the older female, who is joined by her husband. They seem to be the parents of the young male, and they embrace as a family. After the hug, a young child centaur appears, the offspring of the younger couple, and gambols around to the delight of the older couples. The film ends with a heart framing the child centaur's face and the words "thank you" appearing onscreen.
