Synopsis by Rebecca Flint Marx

The eponymous cart man is mute and homeless, and travels the Polish countryside with a cart packed with objects he has found along the road. Although he suffers abuse from some of the people he encounters, he also stumbles upon individuals who treat him with respect and compassion, and treats each encounter, good or bad, with complete silence. Gradually, the cart man's series of troubling memories about his violent urban past reveals how he has become what he has become, and why. As the tragedy at the heart of his silence and wanderings is revealed, he is forced to make a decision about who he is versus who he consciously has chosen to be. The debut of Mariusz Malec, The Cart Man was screened at the 2002 Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema.
