This drama basically existed to give fetching Marguerite Courtot an excuse to run around in boy's clothes. When his wife Eleanor (Alice Hollister) walks out on him, Walter Hastings (Robert Walker) is so embittered that he takes his little girl, Frances, out to the wilderness and raises her as a boy. At the age of 15, Frances (Courtot) roams around the forest clad in trousers and can hunt and fish as well as any man. An artist, Harold Rives (Tom Moore), meets her and, unaware of her sex, is inspired to paint a portrait of her called "The Barefoot Boy," which is a success. Frances' father is killed by a falling tree and she goes to live with a surveyor and his family. They discover she's a girl and have her dress and behave accordingly. When she sees Rives once again, he doesn't recognize her at first. But after they reacquaint themselves, the pair fall in love and plan to marry. The only problem with this is that Frances' long-lost mother is Rives' mistress. Eleanor tries to destroy the relationship, but everything changes when she and Rives realize that Frances is her daughter. Eleanor reunites with Frances and begs forgiveness, while Rives, who has been spurned by the girl, commits suicide.
