Synopsis by Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

In the first segment of the program, host Michael Moore visits Nevada County, CA, to investigate why hundreds have been imprisoned without ever going to trial. Moore talks to several "victims" of the system. One man, whose infant daughter died of suffocation, was charged with contributing to the death of the child. When public defenders pressured him to sign a plea bargain or face a lengthy sentence, he felt he had no choice but to sign the plea. In this manner, Moore asserts, few defendants ever receive a trial by jury. He decides to help the police department by reading everyone in town their rights and having them sign a plea bargain, even before they commit a crime. Next, The Awful Truth talks with a man who has been turned down for a position as a police officer because he scored too high on an intelligence test. Throughout the program, security guards in Times Square accost people at random to celebrate Americans' loss of privacy.
