Synopsis by Mark Deming

In this independent drama from filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Ruth (Kalki Koechlin) is a woman of British and South Asian heritage who has come to India in search of the father who left the family when she was a baby. Ruth knows her dad is in Mumbai, but she isn't sure where, so she spends much of her time chasing various leads and looking for clues to his whereabouts; to support herself, she works in a massage parlor where she supplements her salary by giving customers "happy endings" for an extra thousand rupees. Ruth shares a flat with Prashant (Prashant Prakash), a drug addict who thinks of himself as Ruth's boyfriend even though she doesn't show him much warmth and refuses to have sex with him. Ruth's search for her father isn't entirely about reconnecting with her heritage; her sister committed suicide at the age of fifteen, and Ruth wants to know the truth about this dark moment in her family's history. That Girl In Yellow Boots received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
