Not to be confused with the American sitcom of the same name, the British 50-minute weekly Taxi went for tears as often as it did for laughs. Comic actor Sid James starred as Sid Stone, a big-hearted London taxi driver. Somehow or other, Sid always managed to get mixed up with the personal travails of his passengers, often coming up with a solution to a sticky emotional or financial problem. Created by Ted Willis, the 26-episode Taxi was seen on BBC1 from July 1 to September 28, 1963, then again from April 4 to June 27, 1964.
