Abuses by Tanasse Scatiu, one of the major landowners in a rural region of Rumania, cause conditions to grow worse for everyone, including his neighboring landowners. In this story, a family of rural gentry gradually disintegrates under the pressures of increased agitation and strife between serfs and landowners, brought by the greedy and completely unscrupulous Scatiu, who would happily ruin anyone for profit.
