Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Based on a program heard over Radio Luxembourg, the long-running British TV game show Take Your Pick made its first appearance courtesy of Associated Rediffusion in 1955. Handling the hosting chores was "Quiz Inquisitor" Michael Miles, with Harold Smart as the off-camera organist. The object of the game was to decide whether or not to accept a cash prize offered by the host, or to take one's chances with the contents of a numbered box, taken from a pyramid-like pile of similar boxes. To qualify for the privilege of making such a "lady or the tiger" choice, the players first had to answer a series of questions, but without using the words "Yes" or "No." Anyone who could not follow these simple (?) rules was "gonged" off the program by the host's sidekick, "head gonger" Alec Dane. Canceled in 1968, Take Your Pick was revived by Thames Television in 1992, this time with comedian/singer Des O'Connor in the emcee chair. By the time the series had run its course in 1998, Take Your Pick had lasted for more than 300 half-hour episodes.
