Synopsis by Mark Deming

In 1934, Jutta was a sweet but shy 15-year-old girl from Germany who met a boy named Helmuth at a dance. The two were immediately infatuated with one another, but fate was not going to make their romance an easy one: Helmuth was soon conscripted into the German army, and Jutta learned she was half-Jewish after applying for school, a startling revelation as Adolph Hitler was in power. As the young people fell more deeply in love, Helmuth found himself fighting in some of the most forbidding battlefields of the Second World War, as Jutta struggled to stay out of harm's way. In time, the couple were both part of a daring plot to assassinate Hitler, and despite its failure, they not only survived the war but became the first couple to marry in Berlin after the fall of the Axis. Filmmaker John-Keith Wasson tells the astounding true story of Jutta and Helmuth Cords in the documentary Surviving Hitler: A Love Story, which includes extensive interviews with Jutta and excerpts from Helmuth's home movies shot during the war. Surviving Hitler was an official selection at the 2010 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
