Synopsis by Sarah Ing
The modern interpretation of judicial review is born in the short documentary Supreme Court Decisions That Changed the Nation: Marbury vs. Madison. In 1803, it was unclear just what powers the three executive branches possessed when it came to the Constitution. When William Marbury sued the government over a lost federal appointment, the Supreme Court decided the law was unconstitutional. This decision was the first of its kind and established the power of the Court to interpret the validity of existing statutes and enforce its decision.
