Synopsis by Leslie Birdwell

The London Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Andre Previn, performs the "Symphony Fantastique," a landmark symphony piece. Berlioz wanted to create a work with a plot since he was influenced by great literature, such as the works of Shakespeare. However, the "Symphony" doesn't slavishly follow another story line, but rather works to stimulate the listener's imagination with its lavish arrangements and grand, sweeping style. There is passion and mystery at work in the music, hallmarks of the Romantic area and its emphasis on Nature and Emotion. Previn also discusses Berlioz and his times, his life, and his work.
