Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith
This video seeks to recreate the long history of lesbian culture. Before the rise of fascism, many gay and lesbian bars thrived in different parts of Germany. During the early 1900s, many lesbians also felt relatively at home in Paris. Director Margaret Wescott's interviews with different lesbians and historians are the highlight of this video. A significant amount of data is included regarding the hate crimes and punishments long suffered by many lesbians, both in early centuries and in modern times. Lesbians are interviewed in such cities as San Francisco, New York, Montreal, Vancouver, Berlin, Paris, and Amsterdam. It should be added that there is a brief bit of nudity in this film.
