Katharina and Dietrich Schubert wrote and directed this documentary on two years in the life of young Gerd Zahner as he goes through the process of deciding what he will be doing after he graduates, and how he should go about finding the job that he wants. The camera follows Gerd through important conversations with his parents, and through a series of decisions that eventually land him on an assembly line as an apprentice at a tool and die plant. During this process, what it means to work - the boredom and routine, the discipline, and the depressing nature of many faceless jobs - are all expertly revealed.
