Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The Next Generation concluded its third season with a cliffhanger, the outcome of which would not be resolved until the beginning of Season Four. It all begins when Starfleet Command assigns young female officer Lt. Cmdr. Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy) to the Enterprise. Ostensibly, Shelby is to investigate the Borg-induced disappearance of a Federation Colony, but Riker soon learns that the ambitious young woman is jockeying for his job. This is the episode that ends with Captain Picard suddenly declaring "I am Locutus, of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life, as it has been, is over. From this time forward, you will service us!" Viewers watching this episode on June 23, 1990 would have to wait until September 29 for the outcome. Part one of "The Best of Both Worlds" was written by Michael Piller.
