Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Ski Battalion is set in 1921, not long after the Russian Revolution. According to the screenwriters, the neighboring Finns sent in a group of soldiers to aid the White Russian Armies in their ongoing battles against Lenin and the insurrectionists. In defense, Moscow dispatched a battalion of soldiers on skis to drive the Finns back to their own country. Otto Zhakov plays the leader of the ski battalion with an aura of selfless courage worthy of a Gary Cooper. Perhaps it's merely a coincidence, but the year after Ski Batallion was released, the Soviet Union annexed Finland "for its own good."
