Treva Wurmfeld's documentary Shepard & Dark examines the intense, decades-long relationship between award-winning playwright Sam Shepard and his friend Johnny Dark. The two bonded as young men in New York in the 1960s, and became even closer after Shepard married the daughter of the woman Dark was married to. The film captures them revisiting decades of letters sent back and forth as they prepare these private missives for publication, a process that brings old hurts back to the surface, but also allows the two men to relive some of their happiest moments.
