A.K. Kardar directs this historical drama about the court of Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan, renowned for his strong sense of social justice and for building the Taj Mahal in honor of his dead wife. When poet Sohail (K.L. Saigal) writes a love song about Ruhi, the daughter of a prominent general, the song becomes so popular that a group of love-struck devotees crash the wedding, killing her five brothers. The wise king accepts the lass into his court, and arranges for a contest for hand in marriage: The artist who succeeds in creating heaven on earth wins. Though Sohail wins the contest, Persian artist Shiraz (Jairaj) wins her heart. The resulting quandary is solved when Ruhi is killed at the behest of the king. Following the death of his wife, Shah Jehan vows to build a monument to her and in his infinite wisdom decides that the commissioned artist -- Shiraz -- should also experience great personal loss. In the end though, Ruhi is not actually murdered and ends up with Sohail. This film was K.L. Saigal's final work.
