Synopsis by Alice Day

A flourishing trade with humans as the commodity occurred in the French coastal port of Nantes on the Atlantic. A great need for cheap labor fueled the demand for slaves during the 17th and 18th centuries, with wealthy Europeans clamoring for more supplies of manpower. Almost 2,000 ships moved between Africa and France, bringing their human cargo to a lifetime of misery and ill treatment at the hands of their masters. Shackles of Memory: The Atlantic Slave Trade is enhanced with art and writings dating from this period of exploitation of Africans.
