In this nearly three-hour, three-part historical drama on the fate of Indonesia in 1945 as the war ended and the country headed toward independence from the Netherlands, there is as much propaganda as history, and even more melodrama. After historical vignettes and social analyses, the third and last half of the film is about an uncle and his nephew and the tugs at their tightly-strung emotions as the uncle tries to work out a love affair and the nephew waits for his soldier-father to return from the war.
