Synopsis by Steve Blackburn

Originally aired on PBS in 1984, this documentary depicts one year in the life of a modern, extended Navajo family, contrasting the inherited routines of the older generation with the assimilationist lives of the younger. The grandparents, Chauncey and Dorothy Neboyia, live in a traditional Navajo manner, farming, weaving, and tending sheep. Their hogan has no running water or electricity. Their adult children live in a modern house, and the grandchildren go to a modern public school. Narrated by Will Lyman, much of the video is presented in Navajo, with English subtitles. Highlights include footage of Arizona's Monument Valley.
