Synopsis by Janiss Garza

This Universal crime drama has an intricate, but not illogical plot. Peter James Slaney (William Sheer), who has just recently been released from jail, comes to live at a divey hotel where he falls in love with Lena (Fritzi Brunette), the slavey who works there. The landlady abuses Lena and Slaney is determined to get her out of her sordid surroundings, so he accepts money from a mysterious stranger to carry out a mission. He is instructed to go to the home of political boss John Biggs (Joseph Girard), and to follow the directions enclosed in a sealed envelope. But when Slaney arrives at the home, he finds a child crying and begging to be taken away from her cruel father. He chooses to help the little girl and forgets completely about the envelope. Slaney and Lena take care of the child and hide from the law until Biggs' dastardly nature is finally revealed -- it turns out that the instructions in the envelope involved taking care of the child.
