Synopsis

Explorer Robert Ballard discusses his 30-year career with host Alan Alda, who accompanies him aboard one of the submersibles he uses in his dives. The most famous of them: his discovery of the Titanic in 1985. But Ballard, a geologist by training, says he's proudest of his discovery of hydrothermal vents (and the creatures attracted to them) 8000 feet down in the Galapagos Rift in 1979. Ballard and Alda also explore California's Monterey Bay by means of a remotely operated vehicle. Ballard calls it "telepresence."
