Synopsis by Alice Day

Viewers who think animals are dumb may revise their perceptions after seeing Scientific American Frontiers: Animal Einsteins. In this episode of the acclaimed series, host Alan Alda introduces several animals that seem to be extremely intelligent. While scientists have yet to decide if speech signifies thinking, both Rocky, a sea lion, and Hamlet, a pig, understand sign language. There are monkeys and chimps that are capable of doing math (even fractions), and tool use has been observed in several animals. Alex the parrot seems to understand counting, colors, and abstract concepts.
