The very first fictional version of the legendary disaster, Saved from the Titanic was rushed into production mere days following the tragedy. The star, Dorothy Gibson, leading lady of the French-American Eclair Company had been one of the passengers surviving the ordeal at sea. Gibson was pressured into reenacting her escape by Eclair president Jules Brulatour, her fiancé. Saved from the Disaster had Gibson telling her parents and fiancé, a young sailor, about the disaster, a highly fictionalized account seen via flashbacks. Snippets from this early melodrama are still seen today whenever the "Titanic" tragedy is depicted. The footage of the liner leaving Southampton is actually that of her sister ship, the "Olympic." Premiering May 11, 1912, mere weeks after the sinking, Saved from the Titanic was the first of many melodramatic accounts of the disaster, the most prominent of which was James Cameron's mammoth 1997 production of Titanic.
