As one of the most acclaimed photographers in his native Brazil, Sebastião Salgado won many awards, Yet he also achieved distinction for his role as a social activist, in the sense that his photographs have brought such issues as poverty and famine to the world's attention. In the documentary The Spectre of Hope, Salgado teams up with author and art critic John Berger for an extended discussion; seated at the kitchen table of Berger's home in the Swiss Alps, the men review Salgado's photography, critique globalization, and reflect on the power of visual images per se.
