Synopsis by Hal Erickson

This two-hour cable TV special serves to further blur the distinction between the sexes -- as if this hadn't been blurred enough throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Four strangers, two men and two women, are herded into a Brooklyn Heights brownstone, where for the next month they will live together and participate in a "sexual identity boot camp." Through harmless (and fortunately not irreversible) methods, the males are coached to become females, and vice versa, with the assistance of voice and fashion teachers, a house psychologist, and head coach Deborah Tannen, a prominent sociologist and linguistic professor. It isn't enough to walk the walk and talk the talk of the opposite gender; the four participants have to think, feel and breathe how the "other half" lives. Just the sort of TV fare that makes professional moralists go prematurely gray, Role Reversal was aired by the A&E Network.
