It is 15 years after the end of the first Robotech War. Rick Hunter and his compatriots have taken to outer space in the SDF-3 to find the homeworld of the Robotech Masters and eliminate their threat before Earth is ravaged again. As it is, the sparsely populated Earth has evolved into a feudal society, its devastated lands still pock-marked by the remains of battles long past. The first graduating class of the United Earth Forces Military Academy in Monument City have their work cut out for them. One such graduate, Bowie Grant of the 15th Tactical Armored Squadron, is still uncertain as to whether the military is the place for him, and his friend and squadmate Lieutenant Dana Sterling, decides to cheer him up by telling him about how is parents, the human Max Sterling and the Zentraedi Miriya Parino met and fell in love. Her reminiscence is cut short by the detection of an approaching alien vessel; the Robotech Masters have arrived near Saturn, and are eager to replenish their dwindling supply of protoculture.
