Review by Fred Beldin

This brief document provides some welcome live footage of Richard Pryor practicing his craft in a small club setting, but unfortunately the legendary comic isn't captured at his best. Pryor is clearly distracted by the camera, referring to the film crew several times during his routine, and he allows it to affect his performance. He's concerned about preserving his show for posterity ("I hope I'm funny"), flubs jokes ("Can we edit this?"), blames his mistakes on nervousness ("I ain't had any cocaine all day"), and finally determines that "getting filmed is a drag." He isn't as focused here as on his classic LPs or official concert films, but there are definite flashes of brilliance, bits of classic routines, and off-the-cuff improvisations that rise above the raw, archival cinematography. After 30 minutes of screen time, Pryor launches into a lengthy, detailed skit concerning a wise old wino and a pitiful young junkie that masterfully weaves between drop-dead hilarity and stark drama, but just when he's really cooking, the film runs out mid-sentence and the remainder of the performance is lost. Richard Pryor is an important enough artist to justify uncovering and preserving any possible material, but for entertainment value, casual fans are encouraged to try Live in Concert first.
