Gladys Claypool (Mabel Taliaferro) is spirited off to an orphanage, which is run by a brutal superintendent. A group of financiers want to get their hands on the fortune that should be in Gladys' possession. The girl's nurse (Martha Forrest), on the other hand, wants to see Gladys get the money and works to have it transferred to her. The superintendent, hoping to get a cut of the profit, tries to help out the financiers, and Gladys suffers through several attempts to end her life. Meanwhile, Whitney Gage (Romaine Fielding) is trying to stop the financiers, and he comes to her rescue. When he has to travel west, the plotters wreck the train in an unsuccessful attempt to kill him. He finally locates Gladys' grandfather, and gets proof of her title to the property. The now-wealthy orphan and the helpful young man end the film together.
