The Rescuing Angel was not one of playwright Claire Kummer's better works, nor was it a great stage vehicle for Billie Burke. However, the comedy-drama made a pleasant Shirley Mason film. Mason is Angela Deming, a young lady with a number of suitors. She is loathe to narrow them down to one man until her father (James Neill) finds himself in dire financial straits. To save him, Angela chooses the wealthy Joseph Whitely (Forrest Stanley), and they elope. But one of Angela's other beaus, the less well-heeled William Hanley (J. Parks Jones) finds out, and he is more than happy to tell the new groom that Angela married him only for his money. Because of this, Whitely and his bride get into a heated argument, and she walks out on him, determined to get a divorce. Whitely follows her to her parents' home for more sparring, all of which come as a shock to her parents, who had no idea she had run off and gotten married. But instead of heading for the divorce courts, the couple discover how much they really do care for each other and they reconcile. Angela's rich uncle (John Steppling) dies and leaves her a nice chunk of money, conveniently squelching any future arguments over finances.
