Synopsis
The conclusion of this chronicle of 20th-century conflict, as seen by journalists, explores how the "new kind of conflict" in the post-World War II years resulted in an uneasy relationship between the military and the media. It crystallized in Vietnam, when journalists such as Morley Safer reported on questionable actions by U.S. forces. And when America went to war with Iraq, technology---notably live coverage---was added to the mix. "It only adds heat," says Safer. "It doesn't add light."
