Synopsis by Steve Blackburn
Like Native Americans, gray wolves were a competitor to white settlers, who hunted them almost to extinction in the continental United States. When an environmental program reintroduced the wolf to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, it was a cause for great celebration among the Arapaho. In this documentary, wildlife photographer Jim Brandenburg films the Northern Arapaho Wolf Society honoring its animal teacher by performing the long-banned sacred Wolf Dance. Highlights include the tribal elders breaking a century-old silence and fulfilling a prophecy by letting medicine man Mark Soldier Wolf relate oral traditions regarding the wolf's teachings.
