Synopsis by Alice Day

A discussion of tall buildings is offered in Pride of Place: Building the American Dream - Proud Towers, with many examples provided and a history of their evolution. At one time, the tallest structures were found atop places of worship, but that all changed with the appearance of the 21-story Flatiron Building in 1902. Next came the Woolworth Building, the first true skyscraper, then the Chicago Tribune Tower, followed by the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. There is also a look at more contemporary skyscrapers as guest architects and architectural scholars discuss implications for the future.
