Synopsis by Sarah Block
Preservation Hall was built as a residence in the heart of New Orleans in 1750. It served as a tavern during the War of 1812 and as an art gallery until the 1950s. When the gallery owner began inviting musicians over to rehearse in the gallery, the legend of the hall was born. It officially became a jazz hall in 1961 and serves to this day as one of the prime jazz venues in the United States. On this video, the famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band plays a menu of jazz standards and favorites like "The Panama Rag," "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," "Basin Street Blues," and others that have entertained New Orleans' faithfuls for years.
