Synopsis by Sarah Ing

Quite successful in his professional life, Titian was a leader in the school of Venetian art. His work appeared at the crossroads of the High Renaissance and Baroque styles. Portrait of an Artist: Titian looks at the masterpieces created by this legendary figure. Titian was first commissioned by the Italian government as a fresco artist. As his reputation grew, he was promoted until he reached the status of official painter to the Republic. Titian is best remembered for his mythological canvases, which are praised for their vivid use of color and sweeping brushwork. Though he was often overshadowed by contemporaries, such as Michelangelo, Titian was an influential painter in his own right. His effect can be seen in the work of generations of artists to follow.
