Synopsis by Sarah Ing

Paul Cezanne was a late bloomer, overcoming emotional turmoil and a domineering father to become one of the most respected of the modern painters. Portrait of an Artist: Paul Cezanne -- The Man and the Mountain documents his work. Cezanne's initial hesitancy in becoming an artist was removed when he began studying under the impressionist style. Mentored by Pissarro, the French painter slowly withdrew from his shell. His emergence into society was accompanied by a desire to formalize Impressionism. In lieu of defining the form, Cezanne became a leader in the post-genre. Cezanne's inspiration came mainly from nature and he completed over 200 still life compositions in his career. His provincial residence at Mont St. Victoire gave him all the subject matter he desired. Though he only experienced success late in life, Cezanne's work has been credited with inspiring both cubism and abstraction.
