Synopsis by Sarah Ing

Georges Seurat's creation of the technique called Pointillism places him among the most important of Post-Impressionist painters. His works are remembered in this one-hour program. Seurat was a studied artist who carefully analyzed color theories and linear form. His experiments with style led to the development of Pointillism, which uses small dots of color that work together to make a greater picture. Seurat's most famous painting, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grand Jatte, is known worldwide, and began his system of producing only one large canvas a year. Portrait of an Artist remembers the paintings that made Seurat a leader of the French style.
