Synopsis by Mark Deming
This Hungarian thriller was shot with an eye towards documentary-style realism and tells a story that reflects the nation's turbulent political and social history. Tamas J. Toth plays a man who lost his job following the fall of Communism and became an alcoholic. He eventually picked himself back up and is trying to earn a living selling popcorn on Budapest's streetcorners. However, his new business causes him to run afoul of a pair of debt collectors, who drag him into a twilight world of violence and crime. Pattogatott Kukorica/Popcorn was shown as part of the 1999 Hungarian Film Week Festival.
