Famous Players-Paramount wasn't in the habit of releasing slapstick features in the 1910s, but they made an exception with theatrical comedian Sam Bernard, who brought his stage success to the screen for the studio. Schmaltz (Bernard) is but a humble barber, and dissatisfied with his lot. When he discovers that he bears a close resemblance to Count Hugo Victor Von Mimmeldorf (Dick Bernard), he pretends to be the count and meets wealthy brewer Herman Mocheimer (Robert Broderick) and his daughter (Leonore Thompson). Mocheimer is thrilled that this phony count is taking an interest in his little girl, but she already has a sweetheart (Conway Tearle). Complications arise when it turns out that the real count belongs to a group of anarchists and he has been chosen to assassinate Mocheimer. In the end Schmaltz decides that although he'll never be rich as a barber, he'll be a lot safer.
