Synopsis by Hans J. Wollstein

The story of a French-Canadian trapper's adventures in the American Northwest was adapted from Sir Gilbert Parker's story by Broadway producer Edgar Selwyn in 1907. Selwyn played the lead role himself, just as he did in this the first of two screen versions of the play. Two years later in 1916, Selwyn, along with his brother Archibald and Samuel Goldfish (née Gelbfisch), founded the Goldwyn Pictures Corp. Goldfish then adopted the "wyn" to officially become Samuel Goldwyn. Edgar Selwyn, however, quickly returned to the legitimate stage, and the Goldwyn company (without any of its founders) was later merged with Metro and Louis B. Mayer to become MGM. Selwyn and "Pierre" returned to the screens in 1942, this time starring baritone John Carroll with Selwyn producing. Ironically, the film was released by MGM.
