Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

In this Indian art film, which was shot in the Malayalam language, Devi is a married schoolteacher, living in a small Indian village. Her husband has left her, and every day she goes to the train station awaiting his return. Likewise, every day, she is watched with pity by everyone who sees her, for they all know her sad story. One day, a handsome young man gets off the train and asks for her. When he gives his name to the townspeople, they are scandalized: it is Javan (lover). Devi is surrounded by female relatives and reluctantly takes the uninvited stranger home, and he claims they were lovers once in another town by the name of Pandavapuram. When the village elders come calling to get the dissolute-sounding young man to leave, he agrees to go. Before he can leave, Devi holds him captive and virtually rapes him. However, when she wakes up, he is no longer there, and no one else has any memory of the visit. After school that day, Devi goes back to wait for her husband at the train station, just as she always has.
