Kainat Soomro was thirteen years old and living in Pakistan when she was gang raped by four men. Determined to see justice done, Soomro filed charges against the men who assaulted her, but over the next several years she found herself mired in an inefficient and archaic criminal justice system that favored the accused over the victim and took a dim view of women trying to assert their rights. In a cruel twist, village elders responded to Soomro's efforts by calling for her death, declaring she should be subjected an "honor killing" for sullying the name of her family and those of the accused with her demands for justice. Filmmakers Habiba Nosheen and Hilke Schellmann offer a look into the legal and ethical travesties of the Kainat Soomro case in the short documentary Outlawed In Pakistan. The film was an official selection at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
