Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The considerable comic talents of Stockard Channing and Henry Winkler generated most of the laughs on the half-hour CBS sitcom Out of Practice. The basic plotline revolved around the Barnes family, all of whom were in one way or another connected to the medical industry. Mom Lydia (Channing) was a brilliant surgeon whose reputation had long since surpassed that of her equally talented ex-husband, Dr. Stewart Barnes (Winkler). Oldest son Oliver (Ty Burrell) was an arrogant cosmetic surgeon, and daughter Regina (Paula Marshall) was a hyperactive ER physician. Regarded as the black sheep of the Barnes clan was Ben (Christopher Goreham), who was "only" a couples therapist and didn't even have an "M.D." to his name. Naturally, Ben was the character with whom the viewers were expected to identify -- and it was Ben who, despite his family's disdain, frequently proved himself to be the smartest and most sensible of the batch. Created by Joe Keenan and Christopher Lloyd, Out of Practice first aired September 19, 2005.
