Synopsis by Mark Deming

John Kane directed this short documentary on modern-day practitioners of the Afro-Cuban Santeria faith. Rather than attempting to explain the tenets of the faith, Orishas Are Our Saints shows a handful of Santeria followers in the midst of their traditional rituals, including consulting a holy an for advice as he reads sea shells for messages from the spirits and leaving an offering of fruit by the seaside. Strikingly photographed in black and white, Orishas Are Our Saints was screened in competition at the 2006 Silverdocs Film Festival.
