A teenage girl is forced to marry a wealthy man three times her age, and brings him great shame when she flees the bedroom on their wedding night, and scurries up a nearby tree to avoid sleeping with him. But the moment she comes down she is locked up in the bedroom as punishment. Meanwhile, her new husband's cruelty only grows more intense as he becomes the laughingstock of their small town. Later, when an itinerant artist resolves to rescue the young woman, her vengeful husband vows to burn her alive.
