Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

Not many documentaries manage at the same time to be basically factual and fairly pure satires, but from the moment the midgets, dressed up to appear like Marx, Lenin, Brezhnev and Gorbachev, stroll into the picture to narrate the piece, viewers are sure to get the notion that something strange is afoot. The subject is the faddish popularity of psychic phenomena which swept Russia in the early 1990s, and this documentary focuses primarily on the most outrageous manifestations of that fad, including obvious fakes along with the merely deluded. Among the latter category is a whole tribe of people claiming to be reincarnated American Indians, who ride horses, shoot bows, live in teepees, and dress the part. Scenes from the current "end of the world" psychic hysteria are intercut with breathless scenes culled from Stalin-era propaganda films.
