Synopsis by Connor McMadden

Non é Guisto (It's Not Fair) is a story about growing up, told through the eyes of two children living in Naples: 12-year-old Sofia and 11-year-old Valerio. Both come from families that are not exactly stable. While most inhabitants of the city travel to cooler climes in the summer months, neither family ever takes a vacation. So Sofia and Valerio are forced to wander the burning streets of what seems a ghost town, seeking adventure wherever they can find it. Whenever they are alone, Sofia and Valerio are quite happy. It's when they return home to their families at the end of the day that they are confronted with all sort of problems, namely the fights of their parents, broken promises, and a lack of affection. In order to stabilize their world, Sofia and Valerio begin an analysis of the home lives, realizing that they are more grown-up than their parents. And once they clearly see the flaws of the adults, the door opens wide to preteen rebellion. Italian director Antonietta De Lillo does a fine job of approaching her subject matter from the eyes of a child, employing a handheld camera that captures the action from a child's height. And like the best of Italian films, she manages a fine blend of humor and tear-jerking moments.
