Though the Cowboys finished the season with an 8-8 record, they still set a new NFL record by earning a 26th playoff appearance. As usual, the good luck that often goes with playing in their own Texas Stadium served the team well; only one home game was lost. Troy Aikman did his best as quarterback for the team, while the Cowboys' all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith continued to play hard as well. There were several notable victories, such as those over the Washington Redskins and the Miami Dolphins. While his coaching job ended years ago, all of Dallas was still mourning the recent passing of the team's legendary coach, Tom Landry.
